Care For People with Learning Disabilities
Caring for people with Learning Disabilities
(LD) can be difficult and challenging, especially if the person with LD
has a problem communicating verbally, or making their needs know in what
society depicts as a "normal" manner. Such caring can be very
daunting and very tiring, especially if there is no one around to provide
some support and occasional respite.
The care required will vary according to
the assessed needs of the individual with LD. This may include encouraging
independence in everyday tasks, supporting in social and recreational
situations or physical help in bathing and dressing. This is why Lyn,
our LD Nurse Manager, will always conduct a (FREE) initial visit when
needs are discussed and a Care Plan developed. She will then select a
team of care workers and train them to ensure that they have the skills
and understanding necessary to meet a Service User's needs, however complex.
A member of staff will be allocated as the
'Key Worker' who will help in communication with the management team.
Mobility and socialisation can be maintained and the nurse or care worker
will be sufficiently experienced to arrange independent outings or visits
to day care centres if appropriate.
The Tariff can be used as a guide to
charges, where longer periods of care are needed a substantial reduction
can be made. It is recommend that Social Service Departments are contacted
as they may be able to help financially.
